| The centre is situated in the village
of Bunessan next to the village hall. It is a small unit housed inside
a portacabin, but don't underestimate its importance by its accommodation.
The people who run and man this facility are experts in local history.
If you are searching for your ancestry on the Ross of Mull, you may be
able to trace them at this location, finding out where they were born and
the way that they lived. You can also learn, in general terms, about
the lives they led before their emigration to the new world.
This next information is taken directly
from their pamphlet, and outlines their aims and recourses. The centre
is now attracting significant funding and so I expect that this recourse
will develop into an important data access point.

What is so special about
the Ross?
The Natural Heritage
Geology
The Ross has unique geological formations.
The Isle of Mull was formed from volcanic rock, evidence of the sedimentary
layers can be seen on either side of the Ross, with the glacially formed
Loch Scridain splitting the island.
The centre houses displays and information
on the Ross and the geological identity of the area.
Wildlife and plants
From the centre you can gain information
on how to enjoy the rich wildlife of the island.
Where to look and what to look for!
The People and the Place
The Social History
The Ross has been populated from
time immemorial. Within the centre we have displays relating to the
archaeology of the area from the days of cave carvings to the latter day
emigrations of the people removed from the land in the days of the Highland
Clearances.
To learn more about the Notorious
Factor Mor (circa 1840s) or about the famous Beaton herbalists, drop into
the The Centre where our volunteers will be more than willing to tell you
more.
Hear traditional Gaelic songs or
learn how the people used the land.
Genealogy
The centre has done much work in
building a unique archive of family histories. If you think you may
have ancestral links with the Ross make The Centre your first point of
enquiry! If you are interested in the people of the past their fates
and their descendants we can give you as much or as little information
as you require!
Religion
Within the Ross lies the ancient
chapel of Kilvickeon, this is one of the earliest Christian settlements
in Scotland.

Scattered across the Ross can be
seen many ruins of crofting townships, to learn more about the former inhabitants
their lives and their fates and how the buildings became ruins, call in
and see us!
